Free Port Scanner is a handy tool intended to scan a system and inform you about the active TCP ports on it. You can use this program to analyze your local system as well as any remote system you can access via TCP protocol. The program shows helpful descriptions of the standard TCP ports found, as well as their port names, numbers, and current status.
Free Port Scanner offers a simple and intuitive user interface which is designed to be used by anybody. Its visual design is not attractive though, and it has not been enhanced at all since the previous version. To use the program, you need to input the target IP address to be scanned and select whether to show the closed ports or not. Unfortunately, the program also needs that you define the ports to be scanned. In other words, it is not capable of detecting all the active TCP ports on a system automatically. However, a predefined list of standard ports is provided every time you run the program to help you in the selection process.
Generally speaking, the scanning process tends to be slow and it can take several minutes to complete. Besides, the program turns unresponsive while the scanning is taking place. There is a button to cancel it, but even stopping the process takes time.
To summarize, even though Free Port Scanner is a practical and intuitive tool, it might not be totally effective in detecting some non-standard active TCP ports on a system.
Advanced Port Scanner is a small, fast, easy-to-use and robust LAN scanner for the Win32 platform.
