Free Port Scanner is a network utility that can analyze a system to detect its open TCP ports. The program can be used to analyze both your local system and a remote one, as long as you can connect to it through the TCP protocol.

However, you need to specify the number(s) of the TCP port(s) that you want the program to analyze for you on the system selected.

Free Port Scanner offers an uncolored and unattractive user interface, whose visual design has not been improved for a long time. Basically, it allows you to type the target IP address (only IPv4 addresses are supported) and the TCP ports list. You can specify a single port, a port range or any combination of single ports and ranges. You can also decide whether you want to see the closed ports too or just the open ones. Now you can start the analysis with just the click of a button. However, the process may take several minutes, and the program will turn almost totally unresponsive. There is a button to stop the process, but even this action may take a while to take effect. On the program results table you will see the port number, its status (open/closed), the port name, and a description.

Unfortunately, Free Port Scanner is not capable of detecting automatically all the open TCP ports on the specified address, so you will always need to provide the TCP port list. However, the program offers you a default list of well-known TCP ports and port ranges for analysis. Free Port Scanner cannot detect open ports of protocols other than TCP, such as UDP.

In conclusion, if you just need to check if one or more specific TCP ports are open on a local or remote system, Free Port Scanner may be a valid solution for you. However, many other network utilities out there offer you much more functionality for free, or for a very low price.
